Towers of red rock, and cool blue water

Mountain biking on Utah's White Rim Trail

Castles in the Air: Mountain biking in the Canyonlands

Snaking over and under the red rock cliffs of Utah, in the region known as Island-in-the-Sky, lies one of the nation's classic mountain biking routes: The White Rim Trail.

Here, the Colorado and Green rivers have sculpted a fantasy of shapes from the sandstone. Wide mesas plunge into the blue river waters. Spires and towers rise above us like castles soaring into the air.

Four days of mountain biking here, with a small, gay and lesbian group, allow us to see this desert intimately. There's time to hike into slot canyons, to splash in the refreshing waters of the river, and to sleep under a starlit sky.

At either end of our White Rim Trail ride, we'll have time in Moab for more mountain biking, hiking in Arches National Park, and rafting on the Colorado River.
