Gay travel in Thailand: Two weeks of adventure

Honah Lee: Gay adventure travel in Thailand

It doesn't matter how many National Geographic specials you watch. The only way to fully understand and appreciate how differently other people live their lives is to actually be there and meet them. In Thailand, we've combined a range of activities (trekking, sea canoeing, rainforest hikes, and sightseeing) with several varied opportunities to experience entirely different cultures.

Most memorable: Three days amongst the hill tribes of northern Thailand, who subsist with no electricity or plumbing. Particularly intriguing for gay visitors is the experience of a culture where the line between gay and straight is far less rigid than in the U.S., and where a Buddhist philosophy has shaped attitudes about sexuality.

Thailand is best understood by meeting with the Thai people. You'll have many opportunities to meet gay men here (Thailand's lesbians have historically been far less visible, but that's beginning to change) and to begin to understand Thailand's reputation as one of the world's most gay-friendly countries.
