Notre-Dame-de-Clery, Vendome... Vendome. There's We begin with two nights in Vendome, a canal-laced town whose streets are lined with flowers, while ancient castle ruins sit on the cliffs above. Bike along a tree-lined riverside road to Troo, where an elderly woman will proudly show you the cave in her backyard, where Christians hid out 1500 years ago. (She may let you sample her raspberries, too.) Tour Montoire Chateau, an elegant castle, high on another cliff, and picnic on the grounds. Then, let a semi-retired miller introduce you to a way of life you thought had vanished. At each of these stops, well off the beaten tourist path, we'll most likely be the only visitors. And then, marvel at two of the Loire's grandest castles: The 440-room Chambord, designed by Leonardo da Vinci; and sprawling Blois Chateau. From childhood, you may remember the French song we quote above. After this trip, you'll understand why Vendome gets mentioned twice.
