Queer on 7 Continents

River gorges, wine country, and a rendezvous with ancient Rome

A bike tour in Provence, France

The Mistral: Biking in France's gorge country

Walk down a hidden path in the warm night air. Peel off your clothes, slide into the silent waters of the Ardeche River, and glide under a natural arch of limestone, as the stars twinkle above.

We call this a bike tour, but a midnight swim at the Pont d'Arc may be one of your favorite memories after exploring the roads and countryside in this less-traveled corner of Provence. Our trip begins in Avignon, where you can walk onto the 12th-century bridge memorialized in the children's song, "Sur le Pont d'Avignon". The next morning, we bike to the Pont du Gard, a soaring aqueduct built by the Romans 2000 years ago. And before the week is over, we'll duck into an ancient cellar at Chateauneuf-du-Pape for a taste of a premier French wine.
